According to Mia Farrow's autobiography, Salvador Dalí once presented her with a housewarming gift of a painted clear glass jar, containing one live rat and one dead rat, which he entitled, 'Death Devouring Itself'. Horrified, Mia threw her gift over the neighbor's stone wall fence shattering it to oblivion.

The original live rose, which is depicted, was procured for the purpose of drawing for a girl whose fancy I was lulling. Ultimately, it didn't work out. The rose wilted and coiled over. Bleeding from its dead petals. Love devouring itself...
